2010 Spring Essentials

MARKETING DIRECTOR

  • COVETING: Sparkly gold Jimmy Choos from Davids. And, and I know this will be surprising given my penchant for black but . . . COLOUR! Raspberry, turquoise, emerald, electric blue . . .
  • CRAVING: A sandwich with Doritos smooshed inside/Those Brontosaurus ribs from Pusateri’s.
  • DROOLING: Want EVERY. SINGLE. ITEM. in the Victoria Beckham F/W 2010 RTW collection. Oh, pretty please!
  • FASHION PHILOSOPHY: I don’t think it’s possible for heels to be too high, dresses to be too poufy, jewels to be too large or sparkly. I’m also okay with evening shoes for daytime. It’s evening somewhere in the world after all . . .
  • IN MY PURSE: Mark Bitman’s Food Matters: A Guide To Conscious Eating; five lip glosses; my Blackberry (out of juice again, quel surprise); a pic of my gorgeous hubby; a bottle of hot sauce.
  • ON REPEAT: Eagles, Aimee Mann, Matchbox Twenty, The Thomas Crown Affair soundtrack, Seal ("poddie" never ever leaves the Bose docking station).
  • ZODIAC: Libra/Scorpio cusp (same sign as Weird Al?!). Get to read the daily horoscopes and run with the best one.

Talking With Myself

Just when I finished saying to myself, “no more black clothing for you!”, I heard about this stunner’s pending arrival at Your Choice. It’s Valentino Red. How great is that lace back? Despite the fact that my closet is probably 75 per cent black, I seriously don’t think that’s cause for a complete starvation diet, do you? I wonder where I would get such a crazy idea anyways . . . no more black . . . sheesh!

Ironically, I also told myself, “no more grey sweaters” and then I saw a really cute grey striped sweater vest at Banana Republic. Be straight with me: restricting purchases of warm and cozy sweaters just because they are grey . . . another ridiculous concept, right?

It’s when I start limiting the leopard that you should really start to worry . . .

Love Brian Bailey (And His Cosmetics Too!)

I’ll admit . . . I’m not much of a makeup junkie. Some people love to experiment with different colours and products. Me? I’d rather buy something for my house. Or to eat.

That’s not to say I want to leave the house looking like dreck (I don’t and trust me, you wouldn’t want me leaving the house sans makeup), but once I find something I love, it’s hard to get me to try something new unless it’s lipgloss in which case, I’ve already declared my addiction to you (btw, still full-blown addiction . . . found NINE glosses in my desk drawer the other day).

I did however try Brian Bailey’s new cosmetic line and was glad I did. I was very impressed though not surprised . . . am a big fan of Brian Bailey. Not only is he a fabulous and talented designer, he is lovely and very funny too. Check out my BVTV interview with him at www.YouTube.com/BVShops. (Spoiler: he’s dressed Oprah!)

As for his makeup line, honestly, everything I tried I loved. The lipgloss is great . . . non-sticky with a lovely hint of colour. Doesn’t need reapplying every five minutes which is a bonus. The blush felt weightless (sometimes makeup can feel so heavy, this doesn’t). Ditto the foundation (which you just brush on). The eyebrow pencil . . . I really loved and this is from someone who HATES eyebrows (in the sense that I just ignore them, not that I want to REMOVE them). This pencil really filled in my brows subtly (no one wants to see your brows before they see you). Also loved the eye shadow. I usually use a really dark grey/black to create a smoky eye but I have determined that brown is actually a better colour for me. Who knew?

Bottom line, Brian’s cosmetic line is as fab as he is. Trying new things every once in awhile can be fab too. Note to self.

Ps. The Brian Bailey team will be onsite in a few weeks demo-ing their makeup line. Be sure to check out our website for more details. We’ll be tweeting about the event as well so be sure to follow us (if you can keep up that is . . . we RUN in our stilettos).

Pickles And Ice Cream With Strawberry Jam

Promise . . . am NOT expecting.

Am off this week . . . eating, sleeping, reading, drinking chilled white wine in the backyard, re-watching MadMen in preparation for the new season, eating (some more), etc., etc.

I also want to do lots of cooking and baking and preserving and ice cream making so was glad to hear about my fortuitous timing . . . the Williams-Sonoma The Art of Preserving arrives on Chapters bookshelves this week (June 29th to be exact). From what I understand, along with recipes for strawberry jam (John would like this) and pear cardamom butter (I would like this), there are also SEVENTEEN pickle recipes. I LOVE the sounds of that.

Wishing you a happy, relaxing and delish Canada Day!

iWant

Must admit, I’m in no mad rush to get an iPad. I just don’t see the point . . . I already have a laptop (MAC of course, bite your tongue!) and I love it (even though it is all dinged up and has toast crumbs wedged into the keyboard). I think it is already the perfect size and even though it can sometimes be a bit temperamental, I feel like we’ve really come to an understanding.

My hubby however did run right out and get the iPad and he really does love it. I thought since I always write about what I want, I would perhaps write about something he might want (please note, from here on it, we’re back to what I want).

I think this iSleeve from Roots is really quite smart. It’s 100 per cent Italian leather. It looks fab and of course, it does what it is supposed to: protect your iPad from toast crumbs or whatever iPads need to be protected from.
